We all know our ABCs, but do you know your Hawaiʻi Kine ABCs??

We worked with local designer Jordann Ares of Design Jord to design our “Hawaiʻi Kine ABCs” print, which showcases all 26 letters of the English alphabet with a corresponding word, phrase, or other feature that reflects or signifies our islands. We love this print and we loved working with Jordann to create it!

Jordann is a designer, business owner, and career woman who creates products with designs that reflect the Hawaiian culture and community. She is best known for her colorful greeting cards, party supplies, and stationery.

Read on to learn more about Jordann Ares and her business — Design Jord.

Tell us a bit about yourself! When did you start Design Jord?

I started my business in 2018 on a whim. I was doing some design work occasionally and signed up to do a small fair with a friend. I agreed to join her. I was designing and illustrating for awhile but thought it’d be fun to create some products using my designs. I started with stickers, key chains, and postcards.

We noticed you run your design business in addition to your other career! What's it like balancing two different jobs, and what advice do you have for others who are doing the same?

I love both my business and my career — it’s hard to choose just one path. I work for an organization that supports Native Hawaiians through education and other services. Work related to the Hawaiian community is important to me. I’m able to also run my business with the help of my family and friends who have been with me at markets and providing feedback on designs and new products.

What made you decide design was something you wanted to pursue?

I wanted to add more designs that were in the style, color way, and rooted in the stories that are part of Hawaiian culture and our community. I felt I could add to that with my designs. I’m grateful that people have responded so well to what I create.

What is your biggest inspiration when you're creating new designs?

My illustration style is still changing and, hopefully, developing. I love color — I have a pretty distinct color way that I love. But I’m excited when I get to work with companies, like Coco Moon, and create something new that reflects their brand style. It’s been a lot of fun working with Amber — she’s had a lot of great ideas that you’ll see in the Hawaiʻi Kine ABCs design.

You create so many amazing stationary, party, and greeting card pieces! What is your favorite to work on?

Recently I’ve really enjoyed creating greeting cards — it’s like creating small art pieces. I get to be creative in reimagining how to create cards with a Hawaiian twist.

What is your favorite letter on the new "Hawaiʻi Kine ABCs" collab?

Z for Zippys was so fun to draw! It's a local favorite and food illustrations are always fun to design.

What's next in the Design Jord world? Anything new coming soon?

We have a lot of new greeting cards being released soon. I’m excited to grow that collection and help folks celebrate with aloha.

We hope you enjoyed learning about Jordann as much as we did! Be sure to checkout her Instagram to see her collection of beautiful products.
